The main building, Maritzburg College, was photographed on a hot day in December 1888. The picture, taken with a plate camera, shows 15 boys and two masters all standing in petrified positions. This high school was founded in 1863 and is now (1979) 116 years old.

This mural in the Voortrekker Monument, Pretoria, is an impression of the signing of the treaty between Dingane and Piet Retief. The two youths on the right may represent Thomas Halstead and one of the 14-year-old Voortrekker boys.

Sarel Cilliers (1801-71) was an important Voortrekker leader who brought his own party of emigrant farmers on the Trek. He had a distinguished military career and in October 1836 fought a successful action at Vegkop against overwhelming numbers of the Matabele.
