Sarel Cilliers (1801-71) was an important Voortrekker leader who brought his own party of emigrant farmers on the Trek. He had a distinguished military career and in October 1836 fought a successful action at Vegkop against overwhelming numbers of the Matabele. He helped to rally the dispirited Voortrekkers after the Bloukrans massacres. At Blood River, he distinguished himself both as a fighter and leader. It was partly his suggestion before the battle that led to the commando taking a vow before God that should they gain the victory they would commemorate the day ever after, a promise that was fulfilled. Another distinction of this Voortrekker was that he recorded in a valuable diary his experiences during the Great Trek.
