ON the 13th May, 1955, in the House of Assembly, the Minister of Education, Mr. Viljoen, said that "it had to be remembered that apartheid was the expressed policy of the Government, and it had announced time and again that it would carry out this policy in the universities. He had repeatedly given the assurance that It was not the Government's Intention to intrude upon the autonomy of the universities, but apartheid was a matter of national policy and if the Government decided to make provision for separate academic education this could not be Interpreted as an intrusion upon university autonomy." ("Rand
Daily Mall", 14th May, 1955).
