The outbreak of hostilities in Spain caused the Campbells to return to England in 1936, The same year that Mithraic emblems was published. This work too received little notice. in 1937 the Campbells moved to Portugal where Roy wrote flowering rifle published in 1939.

In 1951 his translation of the poems of St John of the cross was published and enthusiastically reviewed. in 1952 Roy Campbell and his wife moved to Portugal. This photograph taken in the same year depicts from left to right: Laurens van der post. Alan Paton, Roy Campbell and Uys Krige.
