The outbreak of hostilities in Spain caused the Campbells to return to England in 1936, The same year that Mithraic emblems was published. This work too received little notice. in 1937 the Campbells moved to Portugal where Roy wrote flowering rifle published in 1939. That year the Campbells visited Italy and then returned to live in Spain. This photograph depicts the Campbell family in Venice. From left to right: Roy Campbell's daughter Anna and Tess, his mother, the poet himself and his wife Mary.
