Johann David Marquard (1819-80) First public teacher or headmaster of the Government school at the corner of Longmarket and Chapel Streets, Pietermaritzburg. It was opened on 16th July 1849. Marquard was a cultured man, highly regarded by the Dutch community.

Rev. William Nisbett (1799-1885) First Government teacher in Durban in 1850 and was notorious as a flogging master. He had no love for teaching - it merely helped to eke out his income as a military chaplain.

Robert Russell (1843-1910) Third superintendent of Natal Education. A general conscientious Scotsman who in his travels as inspector and superintendent gained a grassroots acquaintance with the small schools of Natal.

The main building, Maritzburg College, was photographed on a hot day in December 1888. The picture, taken with a plate camera, shows 15 boys and two masters all standing in petrified positions. This high school was founded in 1863 and is now (1979) 116 years old.

This mural in the Voortrekker Monument, Pretoria, is an impression of the signing of the treaty between Dingane and Piet Retief. The two youths on the right may represent Thomas Halstead and one of the 14-year-old Voortrekker boys.
