Johann David Marquard (1819-80) First public teacher or headmaster of the Government school at the corner of Longmarket and Chapel Streets, Pietermaritzburg. It was opened on 16th July 1849. Marquard was a cultured man, highly regarded by the Dutch community. |

The main building, Maritzburg College, was photographed on a hot day in December 1888. The picture, taken with a plate camera, shows 15 boys and two masters all standing in petrified positions. This high school was founded in 1863 and is now (1979) 116 years old. |
