Rev. William Nisbett (1799-1885) First Government teacher in Durban in 1850 and was notorious as a flogging master. He had no love for teaching - it merely helped to eke out his income as a military chaplain. Sir Garnet Wolseley during his stay in Natal attended his sermons at Fort Napier but regarded him as senile and useless. The Superintendent of Education considered closing the government school in Pietermaritzburg (to which Nisbett had been transferred) because of parents' protests and the falling attendance. When Nisbett retired in 1873 public relief was universal.
