Jim Gale was well known for his work against apartheid, and at the time of his death in 1985 had been trying to persuade the Australian Government of the urgent need to provide scholarships for South Africans and Namibians, so that those nations, once liberated from apartheid, would have people trained in the skills necessary to facilitate a well-run society. When he died, the Fund was established so that his efforts might be carried on in a real way.
