My ongoing research looks at dance and music in shebeens particularly in black
townships today. I am suggesting that dance and its musical accompaniment
can tell us what is happening in a community at a particular time. I have chosen
shebeens because historically they have played an important role in the
townships like Kwa Mashu where I have been conducting my research. I am
especially interested in cultural identity and how that plays itself in shebeens in
post-apartheid South Africa. Similarly, shebeens serve a function similar to jook
joints for African-Americans in the rural south.
