Friends of Laduma Madela on Ceza Mountain, Mbhekeni Mhlongo

On 8th October 1979 Mbhekeni is kneeling behind Laduma's large dance shield which has a size of a large war shield of the type inkumba. He carries Laduma's battle axe. The ceremonial cloak is Madela's. It is corresponds to the cloak of a traditional war doctor.

Mbhekeni Mhlongo in front of his father Bhidli's cattle kraal. Cf. the corresponding picture of Bhidli F.19/9. Here are seen, to the left, another pair of cattle horns, They are coloured blue, for no special reason.

In Laduma's kraal: Mbhekeni blows a trumpet which Laduma had made from an ox horn. His chain on the chest is made from glass beads and medicines, e.g. from roots and barks, and some in small glass containers. The long horn attached to a beaded necklace contains medicines.

In Laduma's kraal; from the goat killed in Bhidli's kraal, Mbhekeni and Bhidli brought the skin to Madela's kraal where they made an "ingubo yamadlozi" from it (they covering on the ancestor spirit), also called iminqwamba. It is the ceremonial cover of the chest of an isangoma.(Cf.

A little daughter of Mkhafuleni in the Great hut behind a large beer vessel, isikhamba. This is 43 cm high and stands within the fireplace. Its opening is covered with a rectangular eating mat, isithebe, and a plaited beer pot cover, umbenge, which is decorated with beads.

Mkhafuleni demonstrate the way he fights the lightning: He stands near one of his anti-lightning posts=decayed trees which have crosses (not visible) made with red anti-lightning medicine.

The very little ox defeinitivey spread by Mkhafuleni himself  after much spearing without killing. The meat of the ox belongs to the girls of the bride's party who stand around the ox.

In Mkhafuleni's Great Hut. No more medicines were there. Mkhafuleni had the Zionests and had-at least officially-thrown away his medicines. The large beer vessel(1979/II, F12/II, F12/35 and F12/36) was in another hut. The floor was covered with green grass. There was beer drinking in the hut.

A man drinks beer out of a calabash with which he had drawn the beer from the ukhamba. He holds a plate under the calabash as a drip-catcher. The beer pot is covered with a beer pot cover, imbenge, to prevent the beer from being poisoned by witch, and against insects.
