Two drummer boys of the 3rd Royal Warwickshire Regiment in garrison at Fort Napier, Pietermaritzburg, from 1906 to 1907. Aged about 14 years, the boys led the regimental mascot, a young springbok, at the head of the marching troops.

Johann David Marquard (1819-80) First public teacher or headmaster of the Government school at the corner of Longmarket and Chapel Streets, Pietermaritzburg. It was opened on 16th July 1849. Marquard was a cultured man, highly regarded by the Dutch community.

A sketch of West Street, Durban, in 1850 appeared in the Illustrated London News. It is a reasonably accurate representation of the main street with its one-storied houses and shops. The unpaved street shows deep wheel marks in the loose sand.
