1835, entered public service as an interpreter , 1845 on annexation of Natal appointed Diplomatic Agent to Bantu-speaking people in Natal, 1856, Natal granted representative government and Shepstone appointed Secretary for Native Affairs and member of Executive and Legislative Councils, 1872 secured recognition of Cetshwayo as King of the Zulus, 1877 responsible for annexation of Transvaal to Bristish Crown, Remained in Transvaal as administrator until 1879, 1881 retire
