Erasmus Smit (1778-1863) Missionary and Voortrekker minister. His diary contains accounts of the Trek, the massacre of Retief's party, and the battle of Blood River and is of great historical value. He was the only recognized cleric on the initial trip from the Cape Colony.

Ndongeni Zulu was the servant of Richard King who accompanied his master on horseback part of the way on the famous ride to Grahamstown. His role in the affair was confirmed only after Union when the Government awarded him a small piece of land to live on in his old age.

Colonel C. J. Long, Royal Horse Artillery, whose reckless advance with his 12 guns towards the Boer lines at Colenso, caused him to lose them with great loss of life. Lieutenant F.C. Roberts died in a brave effort to save some of the guns. He was awarded a posthumous V.C.

Andries W. J. Pretorius (1798-1853) was perhaps the greatest of the Voortrekker leaders. It was he who took over command of the people after the death of Gert Maritz and led the commando of 470 men and their 64 wagons to the victory of Blood River.
