Marshall's Hotel, now a dwelling house, is situated in the Mpaza Valley between Greytown and Keate's Drift on the Mooi River. At this time it was occupied by Mrs. Marshall, wife of the proprietor, her companion, Mrs. Borham, and the latter's 13-year-old son Kenneth. The three of them had previously been taken to Keate's Drift for safety. So the hotel was empty and had been looted. A police force under Colonel Mansel of about 150men went to Keate's Drift, proceeded through the valley, and took under their protection the two ladies and the boya as well as Mrs. Hunter, wife of the Keate's Drift storekeeper.
