Campbell Collections
The famous etching of the first sale of Natal sugar. It appeared in the Iluustrated London News on 2nd February 1856. The wagon contains bags of sugar. Acutt the auctioneer stands on the wagon ringing a handbell. Hugh Miller, the sugar planter, stands beside him. The sale was well-attended and prices averaged about thirty shillings per owt. At the end of the sale free champagne was provided and hearty cheers given for the two proprietors, Hugh Miller and his brother J.B.
