An 1862 photograph of a row of early Natal buildings all of which have vanisged. Starting from the left is the 2-storied building of messr. Middleton and Wirsing merchants, built in 1850. So scarce was accommodation for public business that the upstairs portion was left as offices for the magistrate, clerk of the peace, messenger of the court, etc. On the ground floor to the right was the post office. The next buildings behind the tree, was Agar's refreshment bar. Next came Acutt's auction mart built about 1858. The next two buildings are T.L. Culling-worth's shop and S. Beningfield's auction mart. The last building, behind the wagon, was the warehouse of J.F Kahts, land-ing agent. Note the street with deep furrows in the sand.
