John W. Colenso (1814-83) Missionary work in Africa has always demanded intensely active and robust people but Colenso was truly exceptional. In his 30 years of life in Natal, he carried out his episcopal duties; built his home at Bishopstowe and a complex of other buildings; acted as a teacher; established a printing press; wrote a dictionary (Zulu-English), many learned books and pamphlets; translated and edited works for the Zulus; engaged in hot religious and political controversy; reared and educated his family, traveled extensively on horseback around the colony, and made himself willy-nilly a world personality.
