A famous picture by Thomas Baines shows the schooner Conch running gently before the wind as she enters the Bluff channel at Port Natal. With all sails set she tows behind her five or six boats crammed with soldiers of the 27th Regiment. The occasion is of course the relief of Captain T.C. Smith and his troops besieged by the Boers under Andries Pretorius in June 1842. In conjunction with H.M.S. Southampton the Conch under Captain Bell landed the troops and drove off the Boers. The splashes in the water around the ship indicate the heavy firing by the Boers. The artist Baines was not present at this historic action but copied a crayon sketch done by Lieutenant Gibb who took part in the relief.
