Durban, embowered in natural bush, as seen by the artist James B. West in 1851. Note how thickly covered the Point and the Bluff. The road in the foreground is the beginning of the Berea. Today all the vegetation and forest except a small portion on the Bluff has vanished, to be replaced by tall buildings, houses, roads, streets, and extensive quays.
