Richard 'Dick' King (1813-71) seems to have been a modest man. Regrettably, he gave little or no information regarding his famous ride to Grahamstown. Some historians claim that he first rode inland and then cut back to the sea beyond the Umtamvuna River but others, as is shown in the map by Cyril Eyre, prefer the theory that he followed the coastal route. Note that he called several mission stations on the way to Grahamstown. A little-known fact is that in the early days about 1828, he acted as wagon driver to Captain Allen Gardiner.
