Civilians suffered heavily during the siege. Among them was a volunteer medico, Dr. Stark, who was billeted in the Royal Hotel. He was killed by a shell which exploded on the pavement outside. It had been fired from a 'Long Tom' dug in on Pepworth Hill five miles away. The shell base embedded in the pavement commemorates his death on that evening of November 1899.
