A sketch of Captain Smith's camp under siege. The tents have been riddled by shot and the ground is strewn with debris. In the foreground groups of men are sheltering along with the sick and wounded of whom there were twenty-six. Food was scarce and on the morning of his relief Captain Smith had breakfasted off a crow. Drinking water was discoloured and evil-smelling. In all the siege lasted 27 days.
