Klooer and C.J. van Rooyen he founded Utrecht and with them made an agreement with Mpande by which the Buffalo River territory was exchanged for cattle. He became the first landdrost of Utrecht and the official spokesman for the other Boer farmers. His later years were spent in cattle farming.
