Gert Maritz (1797-1838) Leader of the Great Trek, a wise counselor, great administrator, possessing a keen intelligence, yet he was fated never to enjoy peace and happiness in Natal. On his deathbed, he murmured, "Like Moses, I have seen the promised land but shall not dwell in it." During the lull in the fighting with the Zulus Maritz sustained the spirit of the disheartened people and appealed to his friends in the Old Colony to come to Natal to assist the Voortrekkers. In September 1838 while encamped by the side of the Little Tugela he became very ill and passed away with his hopes unfulfilled. On 16 December 1895, his bones were re-interred close to the Bloukrans monument.
