Part of the erf-plan of Pietermaritzburg, the first town to be established by the Voortrekkers. During 1838-39 Greyling and Nel, surveyors, laid out 500 even divided by eight parallel long streets running the length of the spur of land and five shorter cross streets. They also took water in furrows along the Zwartkop valley so that each erf-owner could irrigate his land. A geography specialist, R.F. Haswell, of the University of Natal, has stated that Pietermaritzburg is indelibly stamped as an Afrikaner dorp. Note the 'markplein' with the Pastorie adjacent and the erf allotted to Erasmus Smit, the clergyman who accompanied the Great Trek.
