Officers carrying out shooting practice during the voyage to Natal. Note the ammunition box from which the lid has been removed by means of hammer and screwdriver. It is believed that the ammunition supply ran out at Isandhlwana because of the lack of tools to open the well-packed boxes of Martini-Henry cartridges. Thereafter Lord Chelmsford ensured that in every future action an ample supply of screwdrivers as well as open boxes was made available.
