Rev. James Archbell (1798-1866) was Editor-owner of the Natal Independent, a rival of the Natal Witness. A Wesleyan missionary, he had a considerable background of service in Namaqualand, Bechuanaland, Basotoland, etc., and also won the friendship of the Voortrekkers during their Trek. In 1842 he accompanied the British troops to Natal and even acted as an intermediary between the Pietermaritzburg and resigned from the ministry, why we do not know. Thereafter he became a businessman, purchased property and land, lent money, and established a weekly newspaper that lasted five years (1850-55)
