The statue of Piet Retief by sculptor Coert Steynberg. This imaginative and full-length figure stands in the forecourt of the old Voortrekker Museum, Pietermaritzburg. No contemporary picture of Rief exists but this conception of the great Voortrekker harmonizes with the period in which he lived. It Was Retief who chose Natal as the most desirable region for his people to settle. He is here depicted as standing at the head of a Drakensberg pass looking into the promised land of Natal.
