Feelings of shame and humiliation ran high among the people of Natal and even more so among the British troops. This photograph shows a Pietermaritzburg demonstration, one of many held in South Africa, against the Gladstone government for its so-called weakness in making peace with the Transvaal. Here on a wagon is a gibbet and an effigy of Gladstone, British prime minister. In the centre of the wagon is a coffin representing the Liberal Party government. At the back, a Red Ensign bordered with morning black is flown upside down - a symbol of surrender. A mock clergyman at the front will later perform the last rites. Around the wagon stand some determined- looking demonstrators. The date waa the 9th April 1881.
