The two churches at Byrne, from an old photograph taken after the new building was completed. The little building on the left was also used as a school. The verandah room was a small vestry suggested by Colenso. In his book Ten Weeks in Natal (1856) he wrote that the room ' was supplied with a bed and other conveniences for clergymen- a kind of prophet's chamber, which he might occupy at any time, independent and secure from annoyance, whenever he wished to visit the people of the neighborhood, or was detained by bad weather..'
