These old colonists arrived in Natal on the 12th of August, 1849, thereby making a record of sixty years of residence in the colony. Mr. Alex Smith was one of the early sugar planters in Natal and with his father won the first cup ever for sugar in Natal (illustrated on the opposite page). Mr. William Smith established a mineral water business in 1862 in Durban, in which he is still actively engaged.
