Cetshwayo (1826-84), the last Zulu king. He entered the war reluctantly but his people expected him to maintain the tradition of Shaka and thus he had to fight. At Isandhlwana his warriors 'washed their spears' but it was a short-lived satisfaction , since the reputation of the British army and its commander had to be vindicated. As a Natal historian has written of this battle: 'The Zulu Kingdom went death essentially om the afternoon of the 22nd January, 1879'. For Cetshwayo the future held very little except defeat, loss of his kingdom, exile, a brief restoration, civil war, more defeats and finally mysterious sudden death while hiding from enemies.
