The early newspapers carried no illustrations but sometimes used a block engraving to indicate what a column of type was about, for example, the 'Shipping Intelligence' was marked by a small picture of a ship. Agriculture , too, carried an engraving of a cow. it was not until much later that picture were used in a modern way as a result of the invention of photography. This picture, published in the Natal Mercury Pitcorial in the early 1900s was also a big innovation - a photographic joke at the expense of a newly-wed Durban couple.
