William H.C. Lloyd (1802-81) was appointed by Earl Grey, secretary for the colonies, as the first colonial chaplain, in June 1849, in Durban. He supported Colenso as his lawful bishop but was removed from his church of St Paul's. So great was the protest from his congregation that he was stored to his pulpit to enjoy a long and useful life in Durban. He christened, married, and buried many of the early settlers.
