An early street lamp suspended above the door of Caltert's Printing Works in Printing Office Street. In its day it supplied illumination by paraffin, gas, and electricity. It dates back to 1878-80 when the original building was probably erected. The lamp is no longer used but the owners cheerfully pay a Corporation encroachment fee of one rand annually to keep it on their wall. Printing Office Street got its name from other firms who had their premises along this lane, for example, the old Times of Natal, published here till 1881.
