The old muzzle-loader at the base of the Zulu War memorial. The plaque beside it reads: This gun was cast in Woolwich in 1812 and brought to Natal in 1842 by HMS Fawn (Lieutenant Joseph Nourse) which accompanied HMS Southampton coveying troops under Colonel Cloete for the relief of Captain Smith, then besieged by the Boers. It was afterward removed from the Point to Fort Napier and transferred to this position in 1901
