Napoleon Eugene Louis Joseph, Prince Imperial, was killed in Zululand only six weeks after he had celebrated his 23rd birthday. His death occurred on June 1, 1879, when he was serving as an aide-de-camp to Lord Chelmsford; he had volunteered and taken part in the Zulu war against the advice of his mother, Empress Eugenie.
