The college first opened its doors in 1954. As there was no designated campus, college students were forced to share a premise with the Johannesburg Indian High School in Bree Street. All Indian education fell under the jurisdiction of Transvaal Education Department. The college was first known as the Johannesburg Institute for Indian Teachers.
