Background: Religious Traditions and Change The history of the great religious traditions is an evolutionary one. Over the centuries and in different localities they have adapted themselves to meet the needs of changing circumstances. As a result they have expressed themselves in a manifest variety of different forms. However, the need to adapt in this way confronts religious traditions with a basic problem. It is the question as to what can be changed without loss of identity.
