Over the centuries and in different localities they have adapted themselves to meet the needs of changing circumstances. As a result they have expressed themselves in a manifest variety of different forms. However, the need to adapt in this way confronts religious traditions with a basic problem. It is the question as to what can be changed without loss of identity.
