This contribution attempts to pinpoint the concerns voiced for and against ‘anthropologies of the South’, and to sort out the confusion that has arisen in this debate. I suggest that the notion of specific anthropologies is ultimately self defeating, indeed, is a superficial issue, in a debate that is driven primarily by ‘southern’ anthropologists’ concerns about the intellectual and political implications of advocating a reflexive approach to social research for the future of anthropology as a discipline.
