The mother of Mxoveni, Velabengasho and Mkhafuleni Khumalo. Her name was Qhamkile ka Makhoba Khumalo. She was an isamgoma, a diviner. Her top knot is a wig. Her bandolier of respect, isikhafulo, is worked in crochet. Her skirt is from blackened neat's leather.

Mkhafuleni Khumalo in front of his cattle pen. Two horns of cattle have been put on the poles in order to show to the ancestors that the cattle have been slaughtered in their honour.

Mbhekeni Mhlongo in front of Velabengasho Khumalo's goat kraal. His frontal apron, isinene, is from genet and calf skins, his rear apron, ibheshu, from calf skin. On his left ankle he wears a bead ornament.

On the occasion of the wedding of his friend Mxoveni Khumalo, Mbhekeni Mbhekeni Mhlongo impresses the guests with a skin of a mamba snake he wears on his back. Thus he demonstrates that he is an inyanga (medicine man). In his armlet he wears an ostrich feather.

On 8th October 1979 Mbhekeni is kneeling behind Laduma's large dance shield which has a size of a large war shield of the type inkumba. He carries Laduma's battle axe. The ceremonial cloak is Madela's. It is corresponds to the cloak of a traditional war doctor.

Mbhekeni Mhlongo in front of his father Bhidli's cattle kraal. Cf. the corresponding picture of Bhidli F.19/9. Here are seen, to the left, another pair of cattle horns, They are coloured blue, for no special reason.

In Laduma's kraal: Mbhekeni blows a trumpet which Laduma had made from an ox horn. His chain on the chest is made from glass beads and medicines, e.g. from roots and barks, and some in small glass containers. The long horn attached to a beaded necklace contains medicines.

In Laduma's kraal; from the goat killed in Bhidli's kraal, Mbhekeni and Bhidli brought the skin to Madela's kraal where they made an "ingubo yamadlozi" from it (they covering on the ancestor spirit), also called iminqwamba. It is the ceremonial cover of the chest of an isangoma.(Cf.

Portrait of Mbhekeni.(see the whole figure: F10/10.) Mbhekeni in Velabengasho's kraal. In his umqhele (head band) from leorpard skin are two crane feathers, one of them dyed red.

The plants protecting Bhidli's cattle kraal/pen. To the right the flowering cactus, imbuna (in no dictionary). To the left an orchid, imfe yenkawu, elophia.. Bhidli "if you want to send a dream to someone you have to mix imfe yenkawu with other medicines.

On a meat tray there are two longer hind feet and two shorter forefeet of the goat F.18/23 as well as wristlet, "isiphandla". Madela has cut it from the skin on the forehead of the goat. With this wristlet Bhidli honoured later on the author.

With a pocket knife Madela cuts off those bones of the joints of the metatarsia which are used for dividing as dices (amathambo "bones).

The two ankle bones have been placed on the meat tray while Madela continues to work. His neck-band is from leopard skin. The Creator, Mvelinqangi, had told him to wear it. His necklaces are better seen on F19/20.
