Colonel C. J. Long, Royal Horse Artillery, whose reckless advance with his 12 guns towards the Boer lines at Colenso, caused him to lose them with great loss of life. Lieutenant F.C. Roberts died in a brave effort to save some of the guns. He was awarded a posthumous V.C. which his father Lord Roberts wore beside his own on all ceremonial occasions. Colonel Long had a good reputation won at Omdurman. He was also famous as a pig sticker in India, with 50 boars killed in one day. His heavy cavalry mustache and moth slit like a pillar box reveal his character. He received a Boer bullet through his liver in this action but survived to enjoy a long life, dying in 1933.
