A sketch depicting the attack by Hlubi warriors on the Carbineers commanded by Colonel A.W. Dunford. The figure on horseback (left to centre) is Dunford attempting to rally his men. Most of the troops escaped by galloping through their attackers but three young men and two loyal blacks were killed. One of the white colonists shot dead was Robert Henry Erskine, son of the Colonial Secretary. In the picture, the artist shows some of the Hlubi indunas trying to restrain their tribesmen.
