The Dundee Coal Company Emphasis on the Closing Years (1950 – 1962)
It was Peter Smith's discovery of coal in present day Dundee which
led to the establishment of the Coal Industry in Natal. As a result
of this discovery the township of Dundee was laid out and the Dundee
Coal Company was founded around 1882. This was one of the largest
coal companies in the early 1900's and had assumed control over the
St. George's Company, the Burnside Collieries and had erected its own
By-Products Plant in Waschbank.
