Nils Astrup (1843-1919) A Norwegian missionary, he succeeded the famous Bishop H.P.S. Schreuder as head of the Church of Norway Zulu Mission in 1882 and was one of the first missionaries to settle permanently in Zululand. Of a strong physique, he carried out all his visitation on foot.

The children of trekkers in Natal were very poorly off for playthings. The young boys had to be content to play with ready-to-hand wood and 'dolosse' (small animal bones) but the girls were sometimes fortunate enough to possess wooden dolls such as this one, made about the year 1800.
