James Allison (1802-75)   was a Wesleyan Methodist missionary and catechist who worked among the Griquas and other groups in his early days. In 1847 he moved to Natal with 1000 converts, settling at Indaleni on land granted by the government.

William H.C. Lloyd (1802-81)  was appointed by Earl Grey, secretary for the colonies, as the first colonial chaplain, in June 1849, in Durban. He supported Colenso as his lawful bishop but was removed from his church of St Paul's.

Jean-Baptiste Sabon (1819-85) was Durban's first parish priest who arrived in 1852. His ministry embraced care for Indian and Mauritian workers as well as Europeans and he also set up a small school. He was responsible for the building of a fine church in Durban, completed in 1881.

Nils Astrup (1843-1919) A Norwegian missionary, he succeeded the famous Bishop H.P.S. Schreuder as head of the Church of Norway Zulu Mission in 1882 and was one of the first missionaries to settle permanently in Zululand. Of a strong physique, he carried out all his visitation on foot.
